Critical care nephrology
What is kidney care nephrology?
Critical care nephrology is a specialized field focused on managing kidney-related issues in patients who are critically ill, typically in an ICU setting. It involves diagnosing and treating acute kidney injuries, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, and complications from chronic kidney diseases that arise during severe illnesses. This branch of nephrology also deals with life-saving treatments like dialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) for patients whose kidneys are failing. Critical care nephrologists work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive care for patients with multiple organ failures. The goal is to stabilize nephro function, manage complications, and support the recovery of critically ill patients, ultimately improving their overall prognosis.
Renal transplant
What is a Kidney Transplant?
A renal transplant is a surgical procedure in which a healthy kidney from a donor is placed into a person with failing kidneys. When kidneys lose their ability to filter waste and excess fluids from the blood, a condition known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD) occurs. A nephro transplant is often recommended for patients with ESRD as it can restore normal kidney function and improve the patient’s quality of life. The transplanted nephro can come from a living or deceased donor. Before the renal transplant, the recipient undergoes tests to ensure compatibility with the donor . If successful, the new kidney takes over the work of the failed kidneys, reducing or eliminating the need for dialysis.
Need a Donor
As a potential kidney donor, you will undergo a comprehensive evaluation to ensure you are fit for donation. This process includes a physical exam, blood and urine tests, and imaging tests like CT scans. You will also consult with various doctors and specialists during this evaluation. If cleared for donation, the surgery is typically minimally invasive, involving small incisions to insert instruments. A slightly larger incision is made to safely remove the kidney, ensuring a quicker recovery and less post-surgery discomfort.
Kidney Transplant Operation
Kidney transplant treatment involves replacing a diseased kidney with a healthy one from a donor. The process starts with thorough evaluations to determine the recipient’s suitability for surgery. After finding a compatible donor, the transplant surgery is performed. Post-surgery, the patient is monitored closely to prevent organ rejection and manage recovery. Immunosuppressive medications are prescribed to help the body accept the new kidney. Regular follow-ups and a healthy lifestyle are crucial for long-term success after the kidney transplant.Consult a doctor
